I’m lucky to have started my clean health journey right before I got pregnant. Did it make my pregnancy a little more stressful because I knew that every product around me had potential toxins in it? Hmm… sometimes, but I’m still happy to have known about what products to avoid and hopefully I am helping my kids have a healthier life. As parents, all we really care about is giving our kids the best possible life, and picking safe products for our kids is a part of that.
Not all baby shampoos and body washes are created equal. Even if it says “natural baby body wash” on the label, it can still contain harsh chemicals that can potentially harm your baby. The best practice is to read through all the ingredients. However, you can also use the Environmental Working Group (EWG) as a guide. The EWG is an organization that specializes in product research and provides a rating system ranging from 1 to 10, with 1 representing the purest and 10 indicating the most toxic products. They even go one step further and rate some products the safest by giving them an EWG verified label. These items are rated the cleanest.
If you look at the EWG website for baby shampoos, the highest-rated one (as of right now) is rated a 6. The potential health effects that this baby shampoo can cause are as follows: cancer = moderate risk, allergies and immunotoxicity = high risk, developmental and reproductive toxicity = high risk, and use restrictions = high risk. Use restrictions means that the ingredients used are restricted or prohibited for use in cosmetics, according to industry safety guidelines, government requirements, or guidance from the U.S., EU, Japan, or Canada. I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t want to put this product on my baby, however, many people do without knowing it. In addition to harming ourselves, these products can also be harmful to the environment. Most products that are rated well on the EWG website are more environmentally friendly as well.
Even though I use the EWG as a guide, no website or app is perfect so it’s always best to look through the ingredients yourself as well. I’ve looked through all the ingredients for the natural baby shampoo and body washes listed below and they look great! Not all of them have EWG ratings, but that’s ok! They are still clean. Ingredient checking is key.
Below is a list of non-toxic shampoos and body washes for your baby, toddler, kid, or even for yourself! (However, I also have an article for the best non-toxic shampoos for adults if you’d rather check that out). Babies have such delicate and sensitive skin, that you’ll be so glad you chose non-toxic baby products for your little one.

3. Badger Baby Wash, Relaxing Lavender Night Night Foaming Baby Shampoo and Body Wash
EWG Rating: No rating, but it only contains 5 very clean ingredients. They are water, saponified organic sunflower oil, saponified organic coconut oil, organic glycerin, rosemary extract, and organic lavender oil. All safe to put on your baby or child! No bad stuff. They also use potassium hydroxide in the saponification process, but none remains in the finished product. All liquid saponified soaps do this and it’s safe.
This clean and natural baby body wash and shampoo contains no artificial fragrances, parabens, or phthalates. It’s pediatrician and dermatologist-tested. It’s also packaged in the USA with 100% plastic-neutral packaging that ensures the equivalent plastic is removed from the ocean. 4. Mambino Organics Happy Time Shampoo & Body Wash
EWG Rating: no rating, but I went through the ingredients and they look great. No bad stuff.
This non-toxic shampoo and body wash combo is made with organic olive oil and fresh herbal extracts. It does NOT include any of the following: detergents, chemical preservatives, dyes, parabens, SLS, fragrances, emulsifiers, or petroleum-based ingredients. This product is cruelty-free, gluten-free, and GMO-free. This company uses sustainable packaging and FairTrade practices. It doesn’t state that it is tear-free so just to be safe, try and keep it away from your child’s eyes.
5. Bubble And Bee Apple Spice Head-to-Toe Wash
EWG Rating: No rating
This natural baby shampoo and body wash is so clean. This is one of my favorite companies. Bubble and Bee uses mostly organic ingredients and never hides any harmful chemicals in their products. This wash is also vegan and cruelty-free. Since this product is very natural, it is not tear-free so be careful getting it near your little one’s eyes.
You can follow this up with your favorite conditioner or a vinegar rinse. If you prefer a different scent they have other ones, but I read that peppermint and rosemary essential oils shouldn’t be used on young children so I would only use this apple wash for my kids. If you want to buy a separate shampoo and separate body wash (not a combined one), Bubble and Bee has other great options from lemon, unscented, and lavender. Take a look below!
