Nowadays there are so many things to worry about that you shouldn’t have to worry about what is in your make-up, however, companies are still putting toxic ingredients in make-up that can be harmful to your body. According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), here are some of the top cosmetic ingredients and contaminants to avoid in makeup:
1. Formaldehyde: Formaldehyde is carcinogenic; it also causes allergic reactions and irritates the eyes and respiratory system.
2. Formaldehyde releasers: Formaldehyde releasers can have health effects similar to those of formaldehyde.
3. Dibutyl phthalate: Dibutyl phthalate is an endocrine disruptor and a developmental toxicant that harms male reproductive system development. It can cause early puberty in boys and other changes in the reproductive system.
4. Diethylhexyl phthalate: Diethylhexyl phthalate harms the reproductive system and can affect the developing fetus. It is a potential endocrine disruptor and has been classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer as possibly carcinogenic to humans.
5. Mercury and related compounds, including thimerosal: Mercury is a heavy metal that is absorbed through the skin. Mercury can damage the kidney and impact the nervous system. It is especially harmful to the developing fetus.
6. Isobutylparaben: Isobutylparaben is an endocrine disruptor that can harm male reproductive system development.
7. Isopropylparaben: Isopropylparaben is an endocrine disruptor that can mimic estrogen.
8. Butylparaben: Butylparaben is an endocrine disruptor that can harm male reproductive system development.
9. Propylparaben: Propylparaben is an endocrine disruptor that can mimic estrogen.
10. Toluene: Toluene is toxic to the brain and the nervous system; it also harms the developing fetus.
11. Triclosan: Triclosan affects the thyroid and reproductive hormones.
12. Carbon black: Carbon black has been classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer as possibly carcinogenic to humans.
13. PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances): PFAS chemicals harm the developing fetus, increase the risk of cancer, affect the immune system, and disrupt hormones.
14. Asbestos: Asbestos is a carcinogen and can cause lung diseases if inhaled.
15. Lead and related compounds: Lead can affect the brain development of children and cause permanent nervous system damage. Lead also harms other organ systems.
The Environmental Working Group (EWG) offers a comprehensive rating system on a scale of 1 to 10, where 1 represents the cleanest and 10 indicates the most toxic products. The cleanest products go even one step further and are EWG verified. EWG verified are supposed to be the cleanest products.
With that said, no website or app is perfect so it’s always best to look through the ingredients yourself as well. I’ve looked through all the ingredients for the eyeliners listed below and they look great. Below, you’ll see some eyeliners have ratings, some don’t and some even go up to a rating of 3. It doesn’t matter. The ratings are there just for the people that want them. All are good choices. I purposely picked out eyeliners that are made with natural oils, butters, and natural plant-based waxes (instead of petroleum-based wax). I hope you find a clean eyeliner that works for you!
