Why a Morning Routine Matters, How to Create One That Sticks

Having a morning routine is a powerful way to set the tone for your day, boost productivity, be a better parent, and improve overall well-being. Here’s why a morning routine matters.

Establishing a structured morning routine can significantly enhance productivity. According to a study reported by the Harvard Business Review, 92% of highly productive individuals implement planned morning routines.

The Science Behind Morning Routines

Did you know that morning routines can actually rewire your brain for success? Studies show that consistent habits lower stress, improve focus, and even boost happiness by reducing decision fatigue and promoting mental clarity. Activities like exercising or meditating in the morning stimulate feel-good hormones like serotonin and dopamine, helping you start the day with energy and positivity.

With four kids, reclaiming my mornings saves me mentally each day. For the past 13 years I typically get up at 5:30am to start my day. I drink lemon water first thing, do morning devotions and write in a gratitute journal before the kids get up. On the days I don’t, I feel like everyone else in the world has claimed my power. Have you felt that way too?

Starting days like this are so much more powerful, and I get so much more work done efficiently. I am more patient, kind, and less stressed.

Why a Morning Routine is the Key To Success

Reduces Stress and Creates Calm
Starting your day with a routine eliminates the chaos of rushing and decision fatigue. Knowing what to expect helps you feel more in control and less stressed.

Boosts Productivity
A structured morning allows you to prioritize tasks, set intentions, and focus on what matters most. Studies show that a consistent morning routine can significantly improve daily productivity.

Enhances Mental Clarity
Incorporating mindful activities like meditation, journaling, or exercise clears your mind and sets you up for success, helping you tackle challenges with a positive mindset.

Supports Healthy Habits
Your morning is an opportunity to establish good habits, like drinking water, eating a nutritious breakfast, or exercising. Over time, these habits can lead to long-term health benefits.

Builds Momentum for the Day
Starting with small accomplishments, like making your bed or completing a workout, creates a sense of achievement that motivates you to keep going.

Aligns with Your Goals
A morning routine helps you intentionally focus on activities that align with your personal and professional goals, ensuring that your actions are purposeful.

Examples of Morning Routine Elements

Like my morning ritual shared above here are the key elements to incorporate into your mornings.

Hydrate: Always start with a glass of water to rehydrate your body, particularly with lemon or lemon and salt in water for electrolytes. It helps flush out toxins from while your body was sleeping.
Move: Incorporate exercise, yoga, or stretching to boost energy. Try to exercise in the morning, it regulates cortisol levels and boosts energy for the day!
Plan: Write down your priorities or goals for the day. This will save you mental energy and time.
Mindfulness: Meditate, pray, or journal in a gratidude journal or a prayer journal, or practice gratitude to center yourself. Problem solving and decisions always come easier to me after I do this.

Once you finish with your morning, you are free to tackle the rest of the day and do it like a champ! You claimed your power, set the tone for the day, and are ready to be more focused and less stressed.

Creating a morning routine tailored to your needs can transform your day, reduce stress, and help you achieve your goals more effectively.
