Choosing to use an organic, non-toxic mattress offers a ton of benefits besides having a good night’s sleep. Conventional mattresses contain harmful chemicals, pesticides, and synthetic materials. We spend so many hours of our day sleeping, so why not make sure we are choosing a clean, organic mattress that’s free of harmful chemicals so we can prioritize our health and well-being? In more recent years, there has been a rise in childhood disorders (ADHD, autism, allergies, asthma, cancer, and more) and although there are not many studies, there is suspicion from healthcare workers and researchers that environmental toxins could be to blame. Additionally, organic mattresses are made from natural, sustainable materials, which lessens your carbon footprint and supports eco-friendly practices. Being a mom of two, I feel that when it comes to my children’s health, there is no room for negotiation. A non-toxic mattress was the only way to go. When shopping for organic mattresses, here are some certifications to look for so you know that a mattress is actually clean.
Made Safe Label: A certification focusing on human health and the ecosystem. To get a Made Safe Label, the product must go through rigorous testing to check for harmful chemicals.
GOTS Certified: Global Organic Textile Standard. To get GOTS certified at least 70% organic fabric needs to be used. When you look at the label, it will say the percentage of organic material used. However, if it doesn’t say the percentage and says “organic”, it means that at least 95% of the material used is organic. All the mattresses below that are GOTS certified contain at least 95% organic material.
GREENGUARD GOLD Certified: This certification means that the product contributes to cleaner, healthier air. To get this certification, the product is screened for 15,000 different volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are known to pollute indoor air.
GOLS Certified: Global Organic Latex Standard. If a product gets this certification, it must have at least 95% organic latex.
I’ve conducted thorough research on organic mattresses to find which brands hold these essential certifications and to identify which ones are the best non-toxic mattresses on the market. Some of these companies also offer you additional accessories including organic mattress toppers, organic mattress pads, organic sheets, and organic pillows so you can complete your whole non-toxic, organic bedding free of harmful chemicals. Check out my list below!
