For many people in the world today, coffee is their go-to every morning. I have been a decaf drinker ever since I was pregnant, but even though I don’t get the caffeine boost, there is still something soothing and enjoyable about having that cup of coffee in the morning. Several years ago, I made the switch to a plastic-free coffee maker. I love it and I’m never going back. Just because it’s non-toxic, doesn’t mean it doesn’t taste good. In fact, many people think percolators, french presses, and pour-overs have a better taste. So I guess the question that people ask is why choose a plastic-free coffee maker?
Plastic is one of the most harmful materials in our world today. This article states that plastic can cause cancers, birth defects, impaired immunity, endocrine disruption, and developmental and reproductive effects. These days, there is a big push for BPA-free plastic, which is great. Research shows that BPA plastic can cause many health problems, however, there is still endocrine disruption with BPA-free plastic as well. (source). In fact, all plastics can release chemicals especially when they are scratched or heated (source). Since we are heating water when we make coffee, it’s very important to choose a plastic-free coffee maker.
The safest materials are lead-free glass and stainless steel. You’ll notice on my list below that I’ve listed non-toxic coffee makers that are made of these materials. Sometimes companies will hide aluminum pieces in stainless steel coffee makers as well. Aluminum is also good to avoid since it is a metal that can accumulate in the body and cause health issues. The coffee makers below are also free of aluminum. Read the list below and decide which coffee maker works best for you. Between espresso makers, pour-overs, percolators, french presses, and iced coffee makers, there is a good option for everyone to start a toxin-free lifestyle.

In general, pour over coffee drippers have a great taste since they retain the oil and fat of the coffee. I’ve been using a pour over for several years and love it.
