Do you use bandages without PFAs? I didn’t realize I was using them……… until I realized. Oh well. All you can do is make better choices moving forward. I think more people are searching for cleaner and more non-toxic products every day so you are probably aware of what PFAs/forever chemicals are, but just in case, I’ll go through it quickly.

What Are PFAs Chemicals (aka Forever Chemicals)?

PFAs stand for per- and polyfluorinated compounds. They are manufactured chemicals that break down at a prolonged rate therefore, it takes our bodies a long time to get rid of them. Unfortunately, they are everywhere in our environment so even small exposures (like from a bandage) can add up and harm our health. They are known to cause health issues like developmental delays in children, infertility issues, cancer, immunotoxicity, increased cholesterol, and increased risk of obesity. They can also be hormone disruptors (source).

If you search “bandages forever chemicals”, you will see that most bandages contain these forever chemicals (aka PFAs). I read a statistic that said 65% of bandages contain forever chemicals. Since PFAs are also in so many things in our environment like drinking water, waterproof clothing, take-out containers, backpacks, winter coats, furniture, non-stick cookware, and carpets, it’s best to cut down on even the smallest exposure if possible.

(If you’re looking for more ways to cut down on PFAS, check out my other articles: PFA-free dental floss, water filters that filter out PFAS, and PFA-free air fryers.)

Which bandages do not contain PFAS?

I’ve searched Amazon and emailed a few companies to make my list below of PFAS-free bandages. I love that in addition to being free of forever chemicals, many of the bandages below are also biodegradable, plastic-free, latex-free, and non-toxic! There are even a few organic options available.

I also included body tape in this post because I stumbled across this clean body tape and wanted to write about it. I don’t know how many biodegradable, non-toxic body tapes are out there so I thought it was worth mentioning. Enjoy the list and congrats on making the next step to clean mindful living!

1. Patch Bandages Forever Chemicals Free, Natural Bamboo Bandages for Sensitive Skin, Hypoallergenic Bandages

PATCH Large Square and Rectangle Natural Bamboo Bandages for Sensitive Skin, Hypoallergenic Bandages, Compostable, Sensitive Skin Bandages, Eco-Friendly, 5 Square, 5 Rectangle, 10ct

These bandages without PFAs come in a few different options including natural (as seen above), with coconut oil, with aloe vera, or charcoal. I would avoid the charcoal one since charcoal can potentially contain trace amounts of polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), a carcinogenic chemical (source). All of the other options are great. These non-toxic bandages are made with 100% organic bamboo fiber & a mineral-based pressure-sensitive adhesive that gently adheres to the skin.

Not only are these bandages without PFAs, but they are also compostable and the large ones were tested to break down into the soil within weeks. Also, if you are looking for latex-free bandages, this one fits the bill! In addition, it is also vegan-friendly, cruelty-free & contains no plastics or toxins. These bandages use natural coloring.

If you choose the aloe vera bandage, aloe vera is known to help with wound recovery. It helps with cellular movement and tissue regrowth. It can also help with pain and can help control the inflammatory response.

If you choose the coconut oil bandage, coconut oil can also help with wound healing. Coconut oil on wounds has been reported to stimulate collagen production, thereby accelerating wound healing (source).

5. The PLANT-BASED BANDAGE by Generation For Change | 75 Biodegradable PFAs-Free Bandages

The PLANT-BASED BANDAGE by Generation For Change | 75 Biodegradable Bandages | Variety Pack - Aloe, Charcoal and Natural Bamboo | PFAS Free | Stronger Adhesion | Friendly to Sensitive Skin (Spot)

This is not my first pick for a PFAs-free bandage because it comes in a variety pack and one of the varieties has charcoal. I suggest avoiding charcoal since it can potentially contain trace amounts of polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), a carcinogenic chemical. With that said, the other two types of bandages in this box are great. One contains aloe vera and one is natural.

All of these bandages are latex-free, biodegradable, non-toxic, made from bamboo, petroleum-free, hypoallergenic, plastic-free, silicone-free, gluten-free, paraben-free, and vegan.

6. Tru Colour Bandages Without PFAS

Tru-Colour Skin Tone Shade Fabric Bandages – Flexible, Waterproof, PFAS-Free Adhesive Strips Help Protect Cuts, Scrapes, Scratches – Multicolor, 1 in x 3 in, 100 Count, 1 Pack

These non-toxic bandages are made from a flexible fabric to match your skin tone. They have all different colors that can be found on the company’s Amazon storefront. They are flexible, latex-free, PFA-free, durable, and waterproof. These bandages are safe for sensitive skin, however, they probably aren’t as biodegradable as the other options on this list. With that said, they are still a good option since they are PFA-free.

7. The All Better Company, Organic Bamboo Bandages, Hypoallergenic, Earth-Friendly Adhesive, Bandages Without Forever Chemicals

All Better Co. The Better Bandage - Organic Bamboo, Hypoallergenic, Earth-Friendly Adhesive - Pack of 25

This company did not put PFA-free on their site, but it seemed like a clean bandage so I emailed them to ask. They stated that they do not use PFAs in their bandages. These non-toxic bandages are also latex-free, hypoallergenic, plastic-free, and free from known irritants. Like many other bandages on this list, they are also biodegradable and break down easily. They stay put while you’re moving, are safe for sensitive skin, and are made by moms. They are also organic!

8. Welly Bandages Bravery Badge Value Pack | Adhesive Flexible Fabric Bandages | Assorted Shapes and Patterns for Minor Cuts, Scrapes, and Wounds. Bandages without PFAs

Welly Bravery Badge Value Pack | Adhesive Flexible Fabric Bandages | Assorted Shapes and Patterns for Minor Cuts, Scrapes, and Wounds - 100 Count

These bandages are not as eco-friendly as the bamboo bandages mentioned above, however, they are very kid-friendly! These bandages are made out of flexible fabric with many colorful designs. If you want a different design, they have other options here. This company does not mention that their bandages are PFA-free, however, I read it in one of my non-toxic groups. I emailed the company to ask and they stated that they do not use PFAs.

I have not tried these bandages, but I heard that they stick really well. If they are hard to get off, I would try some coconut oil to loosen it. At the time of this article, they have really great reviews so I guess they aren’t too hard to remove!

Final Thoughts on Body Tape and Bandages Without PFAS…..

The world contains so many toxic things. The goal isn’t a toxin-free life, that would be impossible. The goal is to decrease our toxic load. Fortunately, there are several good alternatives for bandages without PFAs out there. They are also pretty inexpensive! Hopefully, you found a good alternative with the list above.
