Hand washing is one of the most important ways to decrease the spread of harmful germs, bacteria, and viruses, therefore it’s vital to our health and well-being. Being a stay-at-home mom, most of my daily routine revolves around handwashing. Some hand soaps on the market contain harsh chemicals that can negatively impact your health. Some of these adverse health effects can be allergic reactions, developmental or reproductive toxicity, or even cancer. Consequently, I make sure to select a clean hand soap that guarantees the safety and well-being of my family and myself.
Before selecting a hand soap, I check all the ingredients for anything harmful and use the Environmental Working Group (EWG) website for reference. For those of you who don’t know, the EWG offers a comprehensive rating system on a scale of 1 to 10, where 1 represents the cleanest and 10 indicates the most toxic products. EWG Verified products are supposed to be the cleanest. Since no website or app is perfect, I also review all the ingredients before selecting a hand soap.

I’ve kept some EWG ratings for those of you who want to see them, but I can assure you that the ones that have ratings are not any cleaner than the ones that don’t have ratings. All of the ingredients in these hand soaps are clean so take your pick. 1. Bubble and Bee Vanilla Foaming Hand Soap
EWG Rating: No rating, but only includes 5 very clean ingredients: organic witch hazel, organic vegetable glycerin, decyl glucoside, organic vanilla extract, and organic lemon juice extract (to balance pH). Glycerin is rated a 1-2 and decyl glucoside is rated a 2 on the EWG website.
Bubble and Bee is a great clean company that makes their own products in-house and ships them out in fresh batches. This natural hand soap is gluten-free, paraben-free, phenoxyethanol-free, cruelty-free, vegan, and also free of artificial fragrances. If you prefer a different scent, there is also a peppermint vanilla and a lemongrass tea tree scent. Everything is clean on this website so you can have your pick! In addition, they also sell large refills to help save money and the environment. I’ve used this hand soap before and it’s lovely!
2. VERMONT SOAP Organic Lemongrass Zen Foaming Hand Soap
EWG Rating: No rating, but I checked the ingredients. It consists of organic aloe vera, organic saponified oil (olive oil, coconut oil, shea butter, sunflower oil, and jojoba), and organic vegetable glycerin. All of these ingredients are safe! There are essential oils included in the different scents as well.
This organic hand soap is a foaming hand soap and is made with nourishing oils that are great for sensitive, dry skin. This non-toxic soap is vegan, gluten-free, and cruelty-free, and doesn’t contain any sulfates, chemicals detergents, petrochemicals, artificial colors, fragrances, animal by-products, or other harsh chemicals.
Quality products are important to this company, they track their ethically sourced ingredients from farm to bottle and everything is made in the USA. There are 4 different scents (one being unscented). This company has also thought about the environmental impact. They make refills that you can buy instead of purchasing additional hand soap bottles.
3. MamaSuds Hand Soap
EWG Rating: This handsoap is made from the MamaSuds castile soap which is rated an A on the EWG website. Because it’s classified as a cleaner, the rating system uses letters instead of numbers. An A is the cleanest rating (besides EWG verified).
This hand soap consists of 2 ingredients: distilled water and (saponified non-GMO olive oil). Both are clean ingredients. The lemon scent also includes an essential oil. Also, instead of buying new bottles every time your hand soap runs out, you can purchase MamaSuds castile soap and refill the hand soap container.
This non-toxic hand soap comes in an 8oz glass bottle. It’s free of SLS and dyes. In addition, it’s septic-safe and biodegradable.
4. Brittanie’s Thyme Basics Clean and Nourishing Natural Hand Soap, Unscented

This non-toxic, clean hand soap is non-drying on hands. It’s also unscented, cruelty-free, vegan, and made without sulfates, parabens, phthalates, and synthetic additives. There are several different scents available that contain the same clean ingredients. Only the essential oils differ in each soap so feel free to take your pick!

This company’s motto is “What goes on your skin, goes into your body”. Their vegan, non-toxic hand soap is made without parabens, artificial colors, or fragrances and is made from recycled material. It’s also made for sensitive skin and is very moisturizing. In addition, it’s organic!

This clean hand soap is more than just a hand soap. It’s multi-purpose and can also be used for household cleaning, unscented body wash, natural shampoo, natural hand soap, face soap, body soap, laundry soap liquid, baby wash, floor cleaner, baby dish soap liquid, or washing pets.
Each order comes with its free recipe ebook to create the perfect dilution. I haven’t used this castile soap yet so I don’t know if the ebook will say to dilute it or not, but I would imagine it would. I’ve diluted other castile soaps before for hand soap and used 1 part soap and 3 parts water. It worked out great! Especially if you dilute it, this hand soap is so inexpensive. I would buy these empty BPA-free foaming hand soap containers to use with the soap.

It contains organic castor oil, organic argan oil, organic jojoba oil, organic hemp oil, organic almond sweet oil, organic apricot kernel oil, and organic prickly pear oil, It’s a great choice for a non-toxic hand soap.
